Implementing Patient-Centered Care

Define patient-centeredness in the context of evidence-based practice. Describe barriers to the implementation of patient-centered evidence-based care in your practice environment (mental health) and share actions that might be taken to alleviate these barriers.


The patient-centered care model is one built based on respect for patients’ experience, values, preferences, and needs in planning, coordination, and delivery of care (Nkrumah & Abekah-Nkrumah, 2019). Building a therapeutic relationship between patients and healthcare professionals is the key component of patient-centered care (PCC) that allow patients to receive support and education that enables them to be involved in making decisions regarding their health. Fortunately, PCC contributes to improving health outcomes, reducing costs, better utilization of resources, and increasing patient satisfaction. However, the PCC implementation process often faces obstacles that require incorporating strategies to overcome the barriers.

One of the barriers to implementing PCC is communication-related challenges, as demonstrated by the language barrier, fear of victimization, the unwillingness of the patient to seek clarification or report unfair treatment, and failure to involve the patient in making decisions (Randall et al., 2020). Communication challenges are often faced in mental health departments and can negatively affect patient-nurse relationships leading to misunderstanding, pseudo-conflict, and stereotyping of nurses. Overcoming communication challenges requires educating patients and relatives about their role in the care and the importance of participating versus the consequences of not participating (Randall et al., 2020). Moreover, nurses should be encouraged to create a positive relationship with patients that fosters the involvement of patients.

Financial constraints impairing the hiring of healthcare providers and the acquisition of vital equipment, technology, and other logistics to improve working conditions is a potential barrier to implementing PCC (Nkrumah & Abekah-Nkrumah, 2019). The provision of funds through working with various agencies and organizations that offer grants will help to overcome the challenges caused by financial constraints and ensure the supply of adequate resources necessary to implement PCC. Other barriers include a lack of leadership support, a lack of goals and sufficient activities for PCC, and differences in cultural, philosophical, and professional activities. Encouraging research on matters of PCC can help reduce the information gap and encourage all stakeholders, including patients, healthcare providers, and administration, to take part in initiatives that enhance PCC implementation.
